For me that was a benefit when I was a NW FO but DL only lets FO select the "premium seats" for free not the "premium premium seats" I remember flying NW from AMS to DTW on an A330 and being able to select 10A for free (HUGE BENEFIT). If you are referring to the EC seats as being "premium premium seats", you are correct. Otherwise an FO can select any open seat in the Y cabin at the time of booking.
On domestic flights, I don't believe that EC is worth the $$, but if there are EC seats available at the 24 hour window, we can change to those seats.
On TATL flights, I will pay for the discounted EC seats, as I see value there, especially westbound, since we can deplane once the door opens, which can make the difference in making a tight connection or missing it.
