Just to give the OP's argument a little more validity, I don't even think a confirmation number is even required to make the change. As long as you know the flight and the name of the passenger, it would be a piece of cake to make any change you want.
You need a record locator and last name on line but if you call you may get it through? A 4 letter password is needed at the initial booking using miles when calling, sometimes, but not always!
