Yes, those are old Rimowa steamer trunks, circa 1930-1950. That is an authentic Rimowa logo for that period of time.
Many of the models came in matched sets, with wooden protective" runners " to protect the case, in leather (as pictured) gray, and a beaten-alu exterior. Ours is a 1930 in alu with dark wooden runners. There is also a large Rimowa case with a rod and clothes hangers for formal wear, and drawer shelving. I bid on a complete set like that in Germany two years ago, and someone in the world is now the happy owner.
The fact that this collection has been kept out in the dry arid high desert of Hesperia, California, and not soggy, musty, mouldy Germany is actually a plus. All are QUITE VALUABLE to the collector, especially when restored, which is a good hobby to keep in the Winter months.
It is doubtful such a case would be the choice for modern traveling, unless one were taking an ocean cruise, the entire Orient Express, or a Trans Europa nostalgia run. The excess baggage fees would be very costly.
Such luggage cases are highly prized for antique car and vintage boat exhibitions and displays in the same time period.
