Same problem, except that there aren't any MC seats available on my flight. Called the Elevate Gold line, and they told me there's no way we can reserve seats together without paying the $20 for MC XP. The benefits seem decent if you're only taking domestic flights by yourself, but most legacies do a much better job of handling non-status companions.
I'm hoping priority security, at least, applies to everyone on the PNR.
