You need to pick up your bags at the international bag claim, take them through customs, then re-check them on the other side of customs.You're then done with international at that point, the rest of your trip will be as though you're on domestic travel. The bad part is you'll need to go through TSA security post customs. So any US carry on rules will be re-enforced once again.
