You can change the dates for a fee of 300 I think, and any fare difference, so if I is available you just pay the change fee. Also you can upgrade with avios if available F there. I have done this on numerous occassions.
When I rang BAEC to ask about changing the inbound flight, I was told that with the booking being an I class, I wouldn't be able to change it. Wasn't even offered to pay a fee or anything, just a straight out no.
