Well, it would save a segment, but I'd fly CX F if I'm in F on that route, connecting in JFK or ORD, even at the cost of an extra segment unless I absolutely needed it. For winter departures, I'd do LAX or SFO, of course. Not interested in AA F TPAC when I can have CX for the same price.
It would cost 2 more segments to fly CX on the routes being discussed MIA/DCA/LAS-NRT on CX transpac would require 3 segments and on JL 2 segments compared to one for AA.
This also opens up more NA gateways for AA Award tickets eg you should now be able to do Asia-(LAX)-LAS-other point in NA with stopover in LAS or use MIA as a gateway stopover from Asia enroute to the Caribbean
