In my experience, getting someone to give up a window or an aisle for a middle seat just does NOT happen. I've even seen a passenger insisting that someone else move to the middle so he could sit together with someone else. The person who was being asked to move to the middle seat declined in strong terms and called a flight attendant, who said everyone had to sit in their assigned seat.
