I could not disagree more with the premise. I find the bulkhead aisle seats to be perfectly fine and in fact always SELECT them by choice.

On the MD80, 1B has sufficient leg room if you angle your legs ever so slightly. On the A319 they even have a cutout in the wall giving you more legroom.

The benefit of the bulkhead is not having some clown lean all the way back. On an MD80 if the guy in front of you leans back, the chair is in your face
