Once upgraded, the likelihood is that your original EC or ER seat has been reassigned. Getting it back at not be possible. As for the trade with the EC sitter as a self-help process is in my opinion inappropriate for the reasons stated. So if you don't want the bulkhead FC seat for your BFUG, talk to the GA ahead of time. It may even work to your advantage when BFUGs are processed. Personally I like the A and D seats in row 1 and frequently will ask, ahead of time, if that woud be an option for the now more numerous BFUG opportunities.
A fair concern, and I like the solution of checking with the GA ahead of time.
As an FO, I just plan to enjoy my exit row and would be happy with ANY F seat if I get an UG. But a trade with an EC pax in the unlikely event that I was the next in line would frustrate me even more than watching the gate assignment of preferred and EC seats for free to E fares and pax who didn't bother to pick a seat. Especially since I used to consistently pay for those seats prior to having status.
