I guess it depends on what you want to see. The W is in Back Bay, so closer to the attractions going on there. The Liberty is on the Charles, across from MIT and is slightly closer to some of the "traditional" Boston tourist sites like Faneuil Hall.
FWIW - having stayed at both, I'd rate The Liberty as a bit nicer than the W. Both are great properties though.
Agree that Liberty is closer to some of the more traditional tourist areas (Newbury street and Commons are very nice to walk around as well). I love the W personally though with their fantastic bar. It's also not exactly far away from the Commons / Faneuil hall.
