I just asked a colleague who spent many years teaching; she said that she would never call little kids students. Older kids she would call either students or pupils, and she would never call university students "pupils".
You are a pupil if you continue to study - e.g. the girl who won the Olympic Dressage is Carl Hester's 'pupil'.
