I would argue the opposite. I book short connections, why not? Of course, there is a risk to miss the connection and I am aware of that. But worse that can happen is to end up on a later flight. So why give up without even trying.
Additionally, as a frequent flyer, I will end up being taken care of better than grandma. If my connection gets tight, I immediately call the concierge upon landing. At YYZ, I have had an instance whereby the concierge phoned the departure gate to make them know I was on my way, and escort me all the way there. Plus, i have a nexus card. Also, I seldom check luggage.
I would also add that we are frequently restricted by AC scheduling, not that we want a MCT connection.
YXY-YHZ is a typical example. If you do not want to get up at 4:30AM for a 6:50AM flight, you want Executive class service on such a long trip, there is only one other option with a 50 minutes connecting time at YVR. Otherwise, you will have to fly out the night before to layover in YVR if you really want a "safe" connection.
