That's an excellent point. It soon will be in AA's interest to delay releasing upgrade inventory until the gate in order to reduce crowding at the lounges.
Wow....for us, talk about an incentive to ensure that the upgrade clears before day of departure (i.e. use miles+copay or SWU if connecting to/from international, making it a worthwhile burn).
I think those prices are just part of the summer sale, but if they hold (any flight other than JFK-LAX and most JFK-SFO available in F/J for $1,200 or less r/t) I think stickers will be less of an issue all together. Those are prices even "normal" people would pay for a premium cabin transcon.
