Couldn't get them to waive the fee entirely, but the duty manager (who INITIALLY had never heard of the Platinum "substitution"
) called SPG and was told about it.
He gave us breakfast buffet coupons for two that were likely worth more than the fee itself.
Maybe that's worth a try??
