I think most of the "proper" words are the same or similar in the various versions of English but slang can be quite another thing, especially when combined with a significant accent (whether it be National, local, ethnic, etc).
A couple of examples:
European/"standard" English: "We are getting ready to go to the store."
African American/"Ebonics" English: "We be findigo to da sto."
American English: Flip Flops
Australian English: Thongs (means a type of underwear in America)
New Zealand English: Jandals ("Japanese Sandals")
