LH did do a good job rebooking me on the next available flight, but I was used to this:

I was surprised that no-one was there, and only pax to NYC were picked up. It's a first time for me that this service wasn't provided. And to be honest, if I didn't have a meeting to attend, I wouldn't have minded, but I didn't have time to loose and I counted on this above promise.
However, as Munich Airport's website goes on to say:
"Both services are subject of availability of resources and actual operational requirements, and cannot be booked by passengers."
They have a limited number of vehicles available and understandably give priority to passengers connecting to flights (usually longhaul) with less opportunity for being rebooked on a later flight.
