A friend of mine had the following experience.
He was persuaded to apply for the same card in a branch. While he knew that there was a better offer available if applied online, the manager at the branch insisted that my friend would score the same sign-up bonus if the application was made through the manager. My friend believed the manager, so he completed his application at the branch. The application was approved instantly.

Fast forward to the activation call. When my friend wanted to confirm the sign up offer from phone agent while activating the card, the agent told him that his offer was a bad one, but not the better online offer. My friend went to the branch and asked the manager for an explanation subsequently, the manager told him that there was misunderstanding and offered an apology. The manager agreed to look for a remedial solution and made calls to the card center. My friend was later told that he could cancel the card and apply again online for the better offer. The application would be approved manually even if the system might disallow it at first. The only bad thing was another hit on the credit report. As my friend had very high credit score and was not planning a loan in foreseeable future, he accepted and did as told. Unfortunately, the better offer was replaced by an inferior offer. He went to the branch again and sought help. The manager called the card center again. It was lucky that a supervisor in the card center agreed to match the expired better offer given this special situation. The extra points were added to the account manually.
