So since this only ever is likely to affect non-elites anyways why does anyone care??
For the reasonably frequently flying non-elite (call it 4x return trips annually) it would take a roughly 15x increase in the rates before the odds tip that it might hit them over 40 years. I have a hard time seeing how the numbers really matter at these rates, even if UA is "twice as bad" as everyone else.
