It does sound like different people are getting different answers, but when I renewed mine at YYZ a few weeks ago, the US officer took my old card back and told me that I could not use NEXUS until I received my new card in the mail (which was less than two weeks later).
So my advice is not to take the chance.
I early renewed. My card expires in July but I applied in December, finally had the interview end of May.
I was told I could keep and use my current card until I receive the new one then I must go into the office to drop off the old one.
So in that case, it all just keeps working
