I don't think the idea behind the app-o-rama is gone, I just think that signup bonuses at this point aren't as lucrative. Last year, you could have a 4 card app-o-rama and pull in 350k (2 citi cards @ 75k each, 100k BA, 100k Cap 1) or something like that. So the final tally of that app-o-rama would be higher than one that you can do now.
For example, I just did one in April and it was only "190k" one (USAir 40k, Ink Bold 50k, United Explorer 50k, Southwest Biz 50k). Still 4 cards, but the actual mileage is only a little over half of what you could do last year.
And like others mentioned, you can run out of cards at some point too. Hopefully, the credit card companies will release a slew of "new cards" at some point, meaning we can all have a go at them. And hopefully signup bonuses pop back up. But maybe that's wishful thinking!
