Has anyone done it successfully? In other words we do not leave for another month so technically I could do this sitting from the US and avoiding the pick-up/overnight stay in MNL?
The snag is that the point of the passport fax is to show the recently obtained Philippines entry stamp. Unless you've already visited the country quite recently you won't yet have the stamp.
I've been in this situation myself in the past. I seem to recall that the stamp doesn't have to be VERY recent - I'm thinking maybe up to a year old, but I'm not sure.
A further potential snag is that the Philippines might be one of those countries that requires posession, on arrival, of an onward ticket out of the country. So if you don't already have your onward ticket sorted out, HA might not accept you on their flight to MNL.
