Having to go to the desk and having to deal with an agent negates the value of being a preferred member. Depending on the location, the time, and the day of the week, it can take a heckuva lot longer than 3 minutes.
The desk was actually quite nice about it, albeit slightly surprised that I wanted a smaller vehicle. The brand new Focus I chose instead was actually a very nice ride, save for the awful 4-speed auto they put into the stripped down fleet models.

I have had the distinct displeasure of being "upgraded" to a Suburban as well as to an F150 quadcab longbed (DEN just loooooooves giving me these), so I understand that there are even bigger behemoths than the CX9, but that doesn't make the CX9 any less of a bear to maneuver in a multistory carpark or to parallel park as compared to a normal-sized car.
Honestly, if my company didn't have an exclusive corporate contract with Avis, I'd be at National every time driving away the small car of my choice.
