This discussion reminds me of living in Chicago during the winters. After a big snow, residents would spend hours digging out their cars from their spots on the street. They would then "mark" their parking spot with a piece of furniture (chairs and ironing boards were popular) to help prevent other parkers from taking their space. Not at all legal as the space is a public one, but more often than not, it was an accepted practice.
