Some countries have rules stating a tourist must have their passport on them at all times (not a copy, but the actual thing)

For me vs the pickpockets--a round the neck pouch and in there goes passport, some cash and a spare cc card.

The other cash and ccard I carry in the normal manner (or in inside zipped pocket in a troublesome area). I also keep a 3rd card in safe at hotel in case someone robs me totally of all in my possession.
