Well, not sure what to advise - I guess it depends on your travel patterns etc.
Getting the challenge "now" (early 2012) - you'll get 4 upgrades "now", if you complete the challenge status will run through 2/2013.
Getting the challenge "late" in the year (later 2012 - Aug?) - you'll get 4 upgrades then, status will run through 2/2014 if you complete, get another 4 upgrades in 3/2013.
Getting the challenge "very early" in the year (1/2013) - you'll get 4 upgrades then, status will run through 2/2014 if you complete, get another 4 upgrades in 3/2013.
