If its a policy change then after I get 1K PQM'S next week I will be giving at least that much to another airline this year to have top status with 2 or 3 carriers.

Many of my flights are short notice, so I don't always have the luxury of calling 120 hrs before. pmUA this was never an issue, and I can recall only 3-4 times over a 5 year period where I failed to upgrade - usually because i made the reservation a few hrs before flight time.
If fares trump status, there is no benefit to being GS. I have about 200K BIS miles left to do this year, I might as well split it between AA and DL and attain an elite status there that is worth something.
