How it works is they can block whatever seats they want up to 1 hour before departure when the counter closes. After that, once everything is finalized, all seats are released and changes can only be made at the gate.

Of course, I am already in an exit row, which was blocked to begin with and I had to ask the check in staff to ask for the seat to be released. So they just put in a request not to release the middle seat - lets see what the situation is once onboard.
good info. Will try the same if it works out for you. I've never flown Ek in Y before ( last 4 years have all been in J or paid F!!!) Had to book tickets in EK Y (due to personal reasons) from LGW to DEL. I have managed to upgrade LGW to DEL to J and on the return I have managed to upgrade DXB to LGW to J. DEL to DXB on 8th April is still in Y. Its a day flight on EK 511 so should be okay. There is no upgrade availability yet PLUS i have run out of miles as I have not been on EK this year!!! I have always had more than 100000 miles on skywards. Now I have only 15900 miles. Hopefully my miles from LGW to DEL will credit in time and I'll be able to do a Y-J upgrade from DEL. If it doesnt I will ask the lounge staff to block the seat next to me.
