Wouldn't a more accurate comparison be paying for hotel internet vs. using a 3G wireless card you already bought?
Each time you pay for the insurance, you are paying for something you already have.
Actually, it's convenience insurance you're paying for, not auto insurance, right? You're paying $18 to avoid that 1:225 chance of having to do all the paperwork, chase down the insurance reimbursement, and pay the higher resulting premium. The
convenience has to be worth it - that is the only basis that makes sense, since the odds say that the loss of money itself would be covered less expensively taking a claim against existing auto insurance.
I'm a pretty stingy person and don't tend to value my own convenience very highly. It's something my wife routinely expends a considerable effort in changing.
