Status plays a HUGE role. It got me on a later PDX-ORD and ORD-LGA flight when it was Y1 and zeros everywhere else. Even the polite yet curt was a little surprised when BPs came out instead of a standby one.

OP - you can theoretically standby for free, as you're on a connection, if memory serves, even as a no status member. Just don't check bags.

Hard to tell if the Wednesday before Memorial Day will have a lot of Alaska traffic.
