And that's one of the reasons why low tier elites on AA have a slightly better chance for an upgrade. When I was GLD, I used to buy 2 stickers for the DFW-SLC segment and get upgraded because there was always space. At the same time, I often saw other GLD or PLT during the boarding process who didn't want to buy stickers to get upgraded.
