can't you "validate" your passport by using it to fly domestically?

Not sure what the min time period is ( I have heard 90 days and also heard 180 days). So unless you are a regular frequent international traveller, this will be regularly occur.
If I want to be able to OLCI for international flights (I fly internationally only 1-2 times per year), won't i be able to keep my passport validated by using it as ID when I fly domestically every few weeks? I don't understand why I couldn't check in with a live agent on a domestic flight, like when I have bags to check, and instead of handing them my DL, I would hand them my passport, and they'd verify it. And then I'd be able to do OLCI for my once per year international flight at T-24, and snag that TOD upgrade. Why wouldn't that work?

This is REALLY STUPID if in the new system one can't simply save their passport info once on ua.com and be done with it, like we could on the PMUA website. Even with once yearly intl flights, I never had trouble checking in online on the old ua.com.
