If you already have the waitlist requested, you should never be SOL. You will be added to the Upgrade Standby List at the airport when you check-in. If you aren't, any gate agent (or club) agent should be able to add you.
The reports in this thread of not being able to be added to the upgrade standby list within 24 hours are just plain wrong. Gate agents may not have the training, but the capability clearly exists.
