As always realty was diametrically opposed to your ideal corporate-run utopia: you had to pay the surcharge on revenue fares but UA absorbed it for upgraders.

During the economic high tides this was quite a feast for upgraders as the UK had the cheapest B fares in Western Europe. So you got a near certain upgrades at no cash and very few miles.
Too good to be true for long, I have to admit though.
