Yes -- If I remember correctly, this happened to me during the HNL-EWR segment. You have to check-in to get waitlisted.
Thanks for the quick reply. I tried to check in and got the error message "We are unable to complete the check-in process as a valid ticket coupon cannot be found. Please contact a United representative at 1-800-300-1547 for assistance." I've tried to call UA here in BKK but either get disconnected or the line is busy.
