Most obvious thing is the bar itself, which is now just a long wooden trestle table the width of the room (same place as before) - reading that it sounds terrible, like a scout hut, but I think it works really well, it opens up the space much more. They have also made more of a display of the bottles on shelf behind the bar, and it just had a really nice vibe last night. Not well described, if anyone cares I'll take a picture next week.
One negative note: I ordered a martini last night (listed in their 'standard' cocktails, 'gin/vodka, vermouth, olive - €12') and the barman asked if I had any preference on gin, so I asked for Tanq 10. When the bill came, it was for €16,50, and on asking the bar manager I was told that the standard martini is only made with the house gin or vodka, anything else is extra. I paid up without a fuss but
like the journalist upthread feel that they should be more upfront about costs in the bar.
And now two totally separate Hamburg queries:
- my S-bahn ticket from the airport cost me €1,40, but the ticket from the Hbf back today was €2,85. On which occasion did I cock-up at the ticket machine?
- I'm back there again next week: where can I get a good steak? Nothing fancy, no great wine list needed, just looking for a good plain steak, happy to travel by S/U bahn if it's worth it.
