Let me add something to gojko88's helpful post: It will definately be possible to print a luggage tag for your luggage all the way to San Diego.
Please be aware though that - due to US customs regulations - you will have to claim your bags at your port of entry in to the US (in your case LAX) in any case, and carry them through US Customs personally. You will then be able to just drop your pre-tagged bags on a conveyor belt after customs. This bag drop process is easy and totally hassle-free if your luggage is pre-tagged with your final destination.
I'm afraid there is no way around this procedure.

Yes, I'm aware that I've to pass through US Customs and then use the baggage re-check conveyor belt before changing terminal, I've done it before, this time is a little bit different because they're two separate tickets, one bought with Swiss and the other with United, so I was uncertain.
