I stand by my comment about the line in the article being naive / misleading though: "
when stiff winds increase the amount of fuel the planes' twin engines burn" - stiff winds don't increase the amount of fuel the engines burn, flying for longer increases the amount of fuel burned. If it was just the stiff winds then they'd be burning more fuel when flying eastbound too, which we all know isn't the case.
