Also, my main question was the separate matter in the title of this thread. As long as I was posting on that, I thought I might as well throw in a secondary question for those with more experience than I have about the chances of securing an upgrade under these specific circumstances.
And that secondary question has its own thread on the chances of upgrade clearing, so I'm still confused.

Did you look in the FAQ (where is says "Please check here first") and has a whole section on very basic questions like "how does the upgrade process on AA work?"
