Given the diversions on the way to the States every year I’d say your friend had a point. I doubt the charters were near MTOW, but if you are flying 3,616 nautical miles on a plane with a maximum range of 3,395; there is a high probability that you’ll have issues particularly westbound.

This is where your situation isn’t really comparable. Again the 752 has a max range of 3,900 nautical miles. IAD-AMS is 3,360 and IAD-CDG is 3355 nautical miles. Continental isn’t overextending the aircraft like you summer 757-300 charter flights. They are however, operating near the edge. Clearly they have a problem in the Winter on fringe routes like this and EWR-Germany or EWR-BCN when you get the really strong winds, but their haven’t historically and won’t be issues in the summer.
