CX gate assignment has been pretty random for me, but I know that HKIA prioritizes some gates to particular airlines (which are closer to their lounges for the convenience of their premium passengers). Take for example UA/TG/LH and their usage of the 40s/60s gates or BA/SQ/QF/KE with the ones starting from 15.
