I would agree that making irreversible modifications or inflicting permanent physical damage is "over the line". Taking off the cover and placing it back before checkout hardly qualifies for such damage Moving to another room wouldn't help if / when all these thermostats are intentionally programmed in a bad way for guests or are simply of bad design.
Granted.. if you know what you're doing.

Knowing me, when I try to figure out stuff myself.. ouch..

Lets put it this way.. I'm all thumbs when it comes to handiman work.
