I just made some changes to an existing ticket (new flights on CO, TG, LH and US) and fortunately was not charged any fuel surcharges. It did take over half an hour for the agent to recalculate the taxes.
In the end I came out even, $12 in new taxes, $90 change fee and a $120 refund (took out AC legs). I am sad that BKK-HND-FRA exceeds MPM though because I wanted to try and get on the 787 but I will have to make do in the 9W suites on TG.
So if you have a complicated itinerary I would make changes now if you have them because not all agents may be aware of these new fees at this time.
I'm guessing that's because the system wasn't able to 'auto-quote' the taxes and fees. Had the auto-quote system worked I think you would have been hit with the new charges. The more complicated your itinerary the less likely the system seems to be able to auto-quote taxes and fees.
