Same here. After my very first flight in 2003, I started putting everything except my ID and boarding pass inside my roll-aboard before I go through security because it's just easier to keep up with my personal items that way. I always assumed airports placed seats or benches just outside the security lanes so that travelers would have a place to sit down and do this after getting their boarding pass.
