Just because you can see it doesn't necessarily mean you'll be the first one to get to it if another passenger decides to pocket it or, more likely, a TSO decides your things need "extra" screening. At that point, anything unlocked is fair game, whether or not you're there to watch.
But who knows? Maybe your luck will hold. But really, would you be so trusting of your fellow man if it were, for example, a Greyhound bus station?
