Did you just ask them if they could route you or just tell them which flights to add?
When I initially tried to book LAX-BKK via YYZ I told them up front what I wanted to do, they said it's not possible. Later, I called back and simply told them the flights (YYZ-HKG on this date, HKG-BKK the next day, then please add LAX-YYZ). They said OK, I have this many seats available or whatever each time. In the end they told me the total cost of tickets which was correct for a single award.
