I'll bite and play devils advocate. It's a good bet that someone is getting points for this. Either the event planner or the person who's credit card it's on. Why would they be more deserving? Yes they did organize the event but if it's a full time planner than that's their job to do so.

For arguments sake let's say they didn't even attend the event. Well the OP had to put in time away from home, etc. So why should they not get the points when they travel like they do for other work functions? I'm just sayin'. An arguement (I'll let you decide if it's compelling) could be made either way.
