Also calculate what the annual fees will be to see if it is worth it. Keep track of the dates you apply so that you can cancel before the renewals fees kick in. Then there are often bonuses for transferring between programs (or even between accounts) that can get you more miles for cheap.
With all the miles you can get, instead of a single round-the-world itinerary, you may just to better booking your own. You can often do one-way awards on many programs (but not all) and just build your own awesome itinerary. The hotel cards will keep you in luxury accommodation. It will take a lot of time and effort to build this and book it but have fun doing it.
