I believe it is the function of the exchange rate and then round off.
I also think one must compare the CASH price on sites such as Expedia, Travelocity etc to see what the CASH prices are versus the mile costs - because I have seen a $76 hotel in Granada Spain, costs 10,500 AA miles!
I stayed 3 days in Manhattan this August, when exhaustive searching turned up standard corporate rooms for $250-300/night. 60,000 miles (and no co-pay or tax or fee or surcharge or surprise) got me a hotel that would have been over $900. If I didn't log in and get the PLAT discount, the same booking cost a lot more.
But 60,000 could get me a roundtrip to Europe in low season, so I wouldn't say I cleaned up.
