I'm not sure the rules state that. They only allow one flight between Hawaii and the mainland and prohibit backtracking between the two as part of the OWE ticket, however, there is nothing I see there that specifically prohibits a surface segment.

WRT the transcon, if a transcon, say LAX-NYC, is done prior to the SJU-HNL trip, that could meet the only onward from HNL definition you proposed and still potentially permit two actual transcons.

As I said previously, I doubt the rate desk would allow this but it might be worth a try. I'd especially like to see the mainland-HNL and surface return explored further.
